It only takes a few swipes to encounter hate speech, disinformation, and extremist content on social media. Narratives that undermine women’s rights and democratic values have become increasingly widespread. One of the key strategies used by extremist groups is the gradual normalization of these messages. The danger lies in the fact that this process is subtle and often difficult to recognize at first glance. Socially relevant topics are taken out of context and infused with ideological agendas. As Michael Bücker, project manager of “Sicher engagiert”, explains, “This is how opponents of democracy gradually make their way into the very center of society.”
In the online Democracy Workshop, “How Extremists Hijack Social Media – and What We Can Do About It,”Michael Bücker will explain how these mechanisms work and how individuals can recognize and counter them.
The workshop will take place online via Microsoft Teams on July 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is offered as an additional training opportunity within the “Sicher engagiert” program.
