On September 1, 2026, the first day of the new school year in North Rhine-Westphalia and Ukraine, a solidarity event for Ukrainian schoolchildren was held at the marketplace in front of Düsseldorf City Hall. The event also commemorated the fourth anniversary of the signing of the city partnership between Düsseldorf and Chernivtsi.
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the UkraineHilfe Düsseldorf project, founded by AVP e. V. and United Help Ukraine, presented the results of the largest humanitarian school furniture initiative for Ukraine. During the summer holidays, more than 12,000 pieces of school furniture from 35 Düsseldorf primary schools were transported to Chernihiv, Kyiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Chernivtsi, and Kropyvnytskyi. There, they help equip classrooms and school shelters, enabling Ukrainian children to continue learning safely even under the conditions of war.
Our special thanks go to the Office for Schools and Education of the City of Düsseldorf, the school leadership teams and staff of the primary schools, the team and volunteers of UkraineHilfe Düsseldorf, and all partners who made this humanitarian initiative possible. Education must never be a target of war.
