Fake News, Real Consequences: Sicher engagiert Shares Its Expertise

On September 10, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., Sicher engagiert and the EAF Berlin will support women politicians in dealing with disinformation. The free workshop, including an end-of-day quiz, will take place online. Registration is available here.

Fake quotes, manipulated images, and deepfake videos have long become effective tools for publicly discrediting women politicians. Together with Sicher engagiert, the European Academy for Women in Politics and Business Berlin (EAF Berlin) is addressing the risks of digital disinformation in an online workshop and presenting concrete ways for those affected to protect themselves and remain able to act.

The speakers Rajae Yahyaoui and Mia Parker from the Sicher engagiert project will share their expertise with EAF Berlin, providing practical insights into the creation, spread, and impact of disinformation campaigns.

Disinformation often targets women politicians in particularly specific ways. Sexualized deepfakes, misogynistic rumors, and targeted smear campaigns attack more than just political positions. They target the credibility, personal integrity, and dignity of the women affected. This conveys a fundamental democratic message: it is not only a politician’s political views that are called into question — her very presence and elected mandate become targets of attack.

“Disinformation can directly undermine political participation. When women politicians constantly have to fear that their image may be manipulated, their statements distorted, or sexualized content about them circulated, this affects both their public visibility and their ability to participate effectively in political life,” explain Rajae Yahyaoui and Mia Parkerfrom the Sicher engagiert project.
