preventex – New Approaches to Digital Extremism Prevention

How can we reach young people where they spend their time every day – on social media? And how can we counter religiously motivated radicalisation in the digital space at an early stage?

These are the questions addressed by the new AVP project preventex@social.networks.

Launched in 2026, this special initiative combines innovative approaches to digital prevention with the targeted use of artificial intelligence.

Four closely interconnected measures are at the heart of the project:

  1. AI-supported, gender-sensitive content development: Creating engaging social media formats such as short videos, memes and carousel posts that critically examine extremist narratives and present alternative perspectives.
  2. Influencer and creator programme: Working with authentic influencers to connect with young people in ways that reflect their everyday lives and communicate preventive messages credibly.
  3. AI-based monitoring: Identifying extremist narratives, trends, codes and communication strategies in digital spaces and using the insights gained to support prevention efforts.
  4. Online streetwork: Reaching out directly to adolescents and young adults on social media, engaging them in dialogue, encouraging critical thinking and offering support when needed.

Over the past few months, a new interdisciplinary project team has come together and established important foundations for practical implementation. These include developing content strategies tailored to the target audience, creating initial creative formats, setting up systematic monitoring and initiating potential influencer partnerships. preventex also benefits from professional exchange with the experienced AVP project streetwork@online. By bringing together the team’s diverse areas of expertise, the project is developing an innovative approach that advances digital prevention and explores new ways of engaging young people.

The project is part of the federal programme “Demokratie leben!” (Live Democracy!) run by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
